Onmyōji beta

Description

When designing a mission for an onmyōji, there should be space for bringing the supernatural to the forefront. While they excel at investigating and solving supernatural threats, the elements exist everywhere and they can show the most rational world the spirits beneath the surface.

Grounded in the magical court diviners of Heian-era Japan, the class also draws heavily from the Chinese magical traditions that merged with Shinto practices to form the basis of Onmyōdō

Gear

Ofuda

Set of 5 enspelled strips of paper. Can be placed to ward a door or passage against a Pitched class of beings. Effectiveness scales with specificity of the ward. (Low effect for “any evil being”, high effect for “Goro-Goro, King of the Shadow Demons”)

Turtle Shells:

Set of three shells used for divination. Cast one into a fire to ask a question of the Conduit that can be answered with Yes or No. Conduit describes how it burns and the player interprets it, though they know the answer to be either yes or no.

Sokutai

Official court dress signifying the wearer as a representative of authority.
Grants moderate protection from mental magics.

Personal Shikigami

Minor elemental (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) spirit companion inhabiting a palm-sized origami animal. Can act according to animal and elemental nature. (A Fire bird could light the way or produce candle flame. A metal monkey could cut small ropes, etc.) Durability of paper. Can be refolded if destroyed.

Calendar

Furled scroll with a detailed astronomical calendar for the area. Once per mission, user may Pitch a social occasion, weather phenomenon or astronomical event occurring now or soon. (Examples: Historical or religious observance, monsoon season, eclipse or meteor showers)

Gobosei

Pentagram inscribed amulet. If allowed to incant over the patient for a Low Duration, the patient can drop a threshold level of Stamina and Essence to heal a wound or take a wound to restore one threshold of Stamina and Essence.

Abilities

Kuji-kiri {Cutting the nine syllables}

Cost: Low-High, Cooldown: Mid, Range:Mid

Enhance your spiritual senses to identify and disrupt what is powering an enemy

Paired Action: Make nine cutting gestures while speaking a corresponding mantra

Supernatural target will have magical powers weakened or lost. Weaker beings can be banished outright.
Normal target will have their emotions powering their action weakened or removed. Weaker willed beings will stop acting entirely.
Essence cost scales on power of being and scope of effect.

Awaken the Elements

Cost Low-High Cooldown: Low Range: Mid

Awaken the spirit of an elemental (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) source to animate it and act according to your instructions and its nature.

Paired Action: Loudly proclaim the name of the spirit and demand it rise and obey.

Cost and effectiveness scale on the size of the spirit awakened. (For Example, for Earth Boulder/Hill/Mountain)
Spirits act according to their nature. An awakened mountain could not walk but could send rockslides and open fissures. Think of natural disasters as a high end effect.
Spirits only reluctantly obey the Onmyoji. Repeated commands or commands against the element's nature can cause the spirit to break control and take vengeance.

Commune With The Spirits

Cost: Mid, Cooldown: Mid, Range: Low

Allow any disturbed spirits of nature or unquiet ghosts to bring their grievances to you.

Paired Action: Meditate, focus your senses, and open to the world beyond.

Spirits may be freely conversed with. They will ask for aid and will offer insights into the current mission as reward for helping them.
You may compel a spirit to answer one question truthfully but this ends Commune With the Spirits.
Broken promises will turn the spirits vengeful.
